artist statement of Andrina Darja

(born 1993) is a Cape Town-based artist working predominantly with lens-based mediums. For her, the camera is both mirror and window — a way to look inward while also reaching out. Working with both digital and analog photography, she experiments with other materials, allowing her process to remain fluid and intuitive.

Through her work, she searches for emotions that live just beneath the skin, those feelings too fleeting and fragile for words. Her photographs emerge as a byproduct of inner reflection — a gentle search to understand her subconscious and the shared experience of being human. The interplay between the human form and nature — and the relationship of each — forms the heart of her imagery.

Andrina spends time with her subjects, building personal bonds and creating space for quiet, authentic moments to surface, witnessed by the lens. Similarly to the relationship built with her subjects, she understands nature to be an important collaborator in her work. Although these spaces almost become anonymous in her photographs, they are deeply considered, explored and reflected on as they form an important pillar of the conceptual layer of her practice. Through her work, Andrina creates surreal fragments — moments suspended between the real and the imagined — gently reminding us that beauty often lives in the in-between.

artist statement of
careshia esperanza

Fine artist and Illustrator creating in her studio here in Cape Town. Her work ranges from illustration, painting and sculptures. Sense of humour and playfulness is what she aims for.

“We should be able to play while making art.” she says. She thrives on mixing things up, working with everything from acrylics and oil sticks to kokis and ink. Her work brings together human forms, often a bit disjointed and warped, with an eclectic cast of creatures and monsters.

Each piece is a little adventure—fun, weird, and titillating, with unexpected twists and a sense of playfulness. She aims to create art that catches you off guard, makes you look twice, and lets you dive into a world where anything (and anyone) can take shape.
