artist statement

My work delves into the depths of the subconscious mind, exploring the shadowy realms of human nature that often go unnoticed. I am drawn to the hidden facets of the psyche—those darker, unspoken elements that influence our behavior, yet remain tucked beneath the surface.

The subjects of my pieces are often people and creatures, their eyes heavy with thought, as though gazing into the abyss of their own hidden fears and desires. These pensive eyes serve as a window to the complexity within, capturing the internal struggle between light and dark, awareness and ignorance.
In my art, I aim to confront the underbelly of existence, reflecting the parts of ourselves we tend to overlook or suppress. There is a rawness in these figures—whether human or animal—that embodies vulnerability, uncertainty, and introspection. Through these works, I seek to evoke a sense of both unease and empathy, urging the viewer to confront their own darkness while recognizing the shared nature of our collective experiences. It is in this delicate balance of light and shadow that the true essence of being can be understood—both beautiful and unsettling, fragile and resilient.

about
careshia esperanza

My name is Careshia Esperanza and I am an artist living in Cape Town, SA. My work ranges from painting to sculptures. Sense of humour and playfulness is what I aim for. We should be able to play while making art.

I thrive on mixing things up, working with everything from acrylics, oil sticks, koki and ink. My work brings together human forms, often a bit disjointed and warped, with an eclectic cast of creatures and monsters. Each piece is a little adventure—fun, weird, and titillating, with unexpected twists and a sense of playfulness.

I aim to create art that catches you off guard, makes you look twice, and lets you dive into a world where anything (and anyone) can take shape.
